Hey people I am writing a paper for english, it needs to be about 10 pages long and the topic that I have chosen is Stereotyes and popular culture.

I would like to see what people from different places around the world think and have of stereotypes of different people and how is it in popular culture and current times.

Info I am looking for:

Where are you?

A few different sterotypes that you might know of.

how are the stereotypes in popular culture at the current time.

Thanks all.

"All blondes are dumb."
"Girls can't play sports!"
"Boys don't cry."
"All minorities cause trouble."
"Black people only listen to rap."
"Asians can't drive."
"All Muslims are terrorists."

Those are a few stereotypes to get you started.

"how are the stereotypes in popular culture at the current time."

What do you mean by this?

Well I'm British. The first thing that comes to mind is the traditional American stereotype of we're all posh bastards who drink tea and have a stick rammed up our arses at childbirth. The fact is Britain is a land of stereotypes, seriously. Check out this action.

The first stereotype that comes to mind is North Vs. South. To the South Northerners are violent, drunken, idiotic, incoherent and chronically lazy. To the North Southerners are snobby, elitist, arrogant, and patronising.

Then there's the various regional stereotypes beyond that.

Cockneys, from London, are considered to be wheeler dealer shady types. Geordies, from Newscastle are considered to be Northerners x 10. The Scouse, from Liverpool have a reputation for nicking anything not nailed down. Essex Girls (from Rikki's home county of Essex) have a reputation for drinking a lot and shagging anything that moves, people from the Home Counties (those counties that border London) are considered to be snobby, arrogant arses even by Southerner standards, here in Dorset we're seen as being stuck in the 1950s. I could go on.

In terms of popular culture the biggest modern stereotype is the Chavs. Chavs are a phenomenon that has only arrived in the last couple of years. Chavs are basically morons, who think they're great. They have no money, and no instinct to work, but get drunk a lot, try to pick fights (though only when surrounded by other Chavs. Chavs, like Wolves, are cowards alone and hard nuts when there's 50 other Chavs backing them up) wear jewellery in a 'bling bling' sort of way, listen to faecese music and are generally the scum of the earth.

To: CTerry you got what I have been looking for. Something like this. SO my paper is not just from the point of view of people in the US.

To: Phil Mossop, I forgot a few words in that. How are stereotypes used in current popular culture, Like everyone who lisens to Rap smokes Pot. Things like that. Or maybe how they might be used in a good or bad way.

Does it have to be cultures or can it be subcultures? As in how we tend to classify people just by the way they look, talk or behave.

One difference could be class. Stereotypes could be, among others:
- lower class: little or no education; blue collar; poor; dialectal language; drive poor cars
- middle class: educated; white collar; enough to spend; "educated" language; speak standard dialects (like General American or BBC English), drive middle-class cars
- upper class: not necessarily educated or intelligent; lucky/inheritance; snobbish language; go around in limos

Or maybe other subcultures, like hippies, yuppies, skaters, goths, bums, snobs, etc.

For stereotypes, some tend to believe that people who live in the South are hicks... living in shacks, drinking beer all day, inbreeding, etc. You get the picture.
