After living with dialup for years in the boonies out here... High-Speed has finally made it. Definitely not cable internet like I'd hoped for but it's better than dialup that's for sure. 3MB down/(forget upload, believe it's 700kbps something)

It's getting hooked up Tuesday, DSL/ADSL you can see the package here. Because it is newly available in my area they had a sale for people converting from dialup to high-speed, so they can get it for 24.95/month for 12 months (same price as dialup), so that's not a bad deal at all.

I can't wait biggrin.gif

Aliant are a Bell reseller, so the service should be fine. Hope you enjoy it Logan! original.gif

Didn't know that.

I was hoping Rogers would make it with cable high-speed internet since it's faster, but Aliant got here first. Oh well, anything but dialup original.gif.

Indeed... I haven't been on dial up for over 10 years now, I'd find it hard going back. original.gif

I used to think 256k was heaven, now my 2mb seems slow. sad.gif Especially when the potential for 8mb is there but Telecom is preventing the masses from using it. That looks set to change though, but it looks like the downstream speed will be limited to 4mb by the crappy 128k upload Telecom are limiting it to.

I've been on an 8 meg line for a few months now...when my downloads slip to 200kbps I now think that is slow rolleyes.gif

I don't get high-speed here in the boonies... just satellite. 300kps is a good day for me.
.Logan
Satellite is fairly expensive, no?
Oreckel

Verizon is starting to install fiber to homes here in New Jersey.

Here's the details: Verizon’s fiber network can sign up for blazing-fast FiOS Internet Service, which delivers speeds up to 30 Mbps (megabits per second) downstream and 5 Mbps upstream. For video, the network will deliver 100 Mbps downstream and up to 15 Mbps upstream.

It will be interesting to see if they can get market share from the cable companies.

My highspeed line is going down suddenly in last few weeks sad.gif

Here's my general progression.

Dial-Up: "I hate Dial Up. Dial Up sucks. I want broadband"

DSL becomes available: "NO MORE DIAL UP! WOO!!!"

DSL arrives: "This rules! No more slowness! I LOVE THIS!"

One Month Later: "Ewww 56k. I can't use that dude. It's so impossibly slow. I'll wait til I get home. Luddite"

Two Months Later: "Stupid file. Download faster dammit"

Three Months Later: "I hate 512k. 512k sucks. I want 1 MBit"

Getting upgraded from 2Mbps (current max) to 4000kbps in summer (400kpbs down). Then that will probably be the max for quite awhile. There's one company that owns the net all over the country (Norway), so other ISPs rent from them and are forced to charge the same prices. There's only real competition in the larger cities. Most villages are left with dial-up as the only option.

Ive been usuing DSL for the last couple of days. I have 3mbs installed on my line and from what Ive noticed Bell is much more Stable and consistant then Rogers is.

My area was bad for Cable internet extremly congested.

I had Comcast Cable Internet, but then I moved down to my dad's and I'm back on dialup.

To top it off, the dialup service is AOL. We have cable and dsl and satallite avalible in my area, my parents are just too ignorant to get it.

Yep. Sucks.

I've had dial up for way too long now
I've been talking to Aliant for about a few weeks then they decided to extend it to my area it costed about 46 k to do it
I was persistent enough to try and get it here and I was in talks with our community heads and aliant to get both sides to chp in on the costs then aliant called me up letting me know that they were going to pay for the while thing and that it should be done by the end of may or beginning on june
I should be getting it withina month and I am so damn excited!!
DJ_Canada
I have been on cable internet for 9 years now. Currently I have a 7MB download. I could NEVER imagine being on dialup ever again.

Soon I will have both cable internet (personal) and DSL (business) in the same location. So I will be in connection heaven. Okay...as close as one can get without a T1 line that is.
Garciaaahhhh
I pay for my cable $15 a month for 1.5mb upload, and 250k download.
