For years, I have read references to
Portals but I don't understand what they are! Can someone explain the term? Sorry if this is an incredibly stupid question!!

A portal is a page with loads of stuff on it. Like yahoo.com or msn.com
Basically the whole universe and more on the same page. It is a doorway (port) to everything else...

A portal is basically the basis of a website, in which you enter various parts of the site through the portal. The portal can include website sponsorships, navigation links, news items, various content and so forth.

A portal can range from a full site nav system to simply a single page with a logo and a click here to enter. It's the opening page of a site, and may or may not have anything of use on it.
invision comes complete with it's own portal btw, which pretty much does what most sites want if they are solely community based.
The long anticipated (well l heard about it a few weeks ago anyway) invision CMS may change the portal options for out of the box invision site setup. We wait to see what they will spring on us.
