Wow... that's really neat.

I really hope IPB implements a spell checker soon!

It's kind of slow, but it's pretty neat.

It can be optimized to be fast, Im sure. I wonder if we will actually see this, cause this is a very handy feature. Saves us all the typo's.
getstuff4less
Nice, I wonder if it can do it on the fly like MS Word.
Constantine79
things like this are definetely cool but has anyone of you ever considered the extra load on the server's cpu or the site's bandwith limit ?
Grant
It seems this system is similar to GMail's systems... they seem to be doing fine... Plus its Javascript... Server Load shouldn't fluctuate too much, since this system is mostly handled on the client side. +1

I like that! +1 thumbsup.gif

I hope they don't spend any time in the release schedule implementing this.

It should be left to as a mod. Because it would be too time consuming to develop.

"Source Included" that means it should be easy to slot it in original.gif

should work in firefox if javascript is enabled
Dan C
To be honest, i think implementing something like that would be overkill, i really do. ermm.gif unsure.gif

What is the problem as long as it is switchable (on/off) ?

Why shouldn't it be possible if Gmail does it.
OK they have a LOT of servers, but also a lot of users ...
POPOEVER
it'll be a turn for bulletin boards development

I'd personally rather my members typed at an acceptable language standard for their age in the first place, than have to rely on a spell checker which slows loading times, in hope that the members would bother to use it, when chances are they wouldn't bother anyway.

Agreed.

Rates high on the coolness factor, but would be too slow for me to use regularly.

Maybe IE 7.0 will have an integrated spell checker, i.e. IESpell.

live search and this spell checker are awesome!!
where did you find livesearch jpgodlew?

This is definitely my opinion about this; basically those who are bothered about their spelling are more likely to either make a decent enough guess at spellings anyway, or check somewhere.

The people we want to use it are those people who tlk lyk that all the tym - which is really annoying! Find a reasonable way to automatically convert those words or otherwise stop it happening and I'll be happy.

Spellcheckers are for writing letters to important people, complaint emails to companies etc. They're just not needed on 99.9% of forums.

However, with that source code I'm sure someone could make a mod to satisfy the people who think it is a good idea. Who knows, if they use the module system it might not even be too much of a 'Barneys Girlfriend' to deal with board upgrades too...

this one is not bad also: http://www.forgetfoo.com/?blogid=3843

I hope they add a proper spell checker too. My users would love it!

I used to think that a spell checker would be great on my board until I tried one or 2 mods and they tend to slow things down and have limited vocabularies. I gave up completely when I found the spell check that is built into the google tool bar toolbar.google.com It is the best implementation of a spell checker that I have seen for web use and it works on just about any text box on any site so is much more useful than one just for the board.

Safari's spell checker implementation is good, too, so really, all those that want it could just install / activate the features available for their browser. thumbsup.gif
