Is there enough emphasis on my writing? Is the design attractive, without being overbearing?

Hmm, doesn't seem that professional, but I like the header.

In my opinion your (info) links should go to your sample writing page. You could easily remove one whole page of the site by adding the info from the publications page right to the sample writing page. Having the two seems redundant.

I like the colors and layout. The header is interensting yet still subtle enough not to draw attention away from the content. Maybe some sort of divider between the "pages" column and the main content, and pad the footer a bit more so it is not riding the top of the box so much.

Using different text colors for headers can be visiually appealing too, but try to use what is already in the site.

I like the drop shadow (I have yet to make a nice drop shadow on a site), my IE sees the content section to be just a tad offset to the right, but FF looks correct.

On the sample writing page, some of the samples are in quotes, others are not. Looks cool otherwise!
