Full Version: IPB Tweaking?
Invision Power Services > Community Forums > Community General Chat
.John.
My host says my board is taking up too many resources, and such - and that modifications need to be made.

I'd like tips on modifications people make to IPB to make it run faster, better and/or to ease the strain on the server.

Much regards.

Get a better host... >_>
.John.
That's out of the question.

Anyone with advice?
Quillz
Seriously, you should disable things such as the tables that show which users are browing the forums, etc. Those can be resource hogs.
.John.
Well, my users like to have that feature - but does it really make THAT much of a difference?
.Wolfie
Talking about your main or your beta forums?

If the main ones, see if you can drag it out until v2.1 is officially released (and then see if that eases the problem).

If it's the beta, can you give an example of the debug information it's returning?

(Times, CPU, queries) - and in all seriousness, if your host is griping about IPB being a hog, then your host is a tight-butt about resources. (and I thought that *MY* host was strict about that stuff).

why is getting a new host out of the question?

if it's becuase your host offers lots of space for little money... it's most likely a rip off... becuase your host shouldnt' be teling you your board is taking up too much resources. It's your bandwith and you get to keep it lol

know what I mean?

PS > I think someone is DDoSing the server, it's extremly slow,
nvm it's cool now

Serously, get a new host. If your host cant handle a regular IPB installation, then they/it's crap. Period.

I've got to agree with the advice above. If your host can't handle the strain your site puts on it you can either stop your site from growing (close registration, delete accounts and posts) or you can find a host that can give you the resources you need. Whatever band-aid optimization you do to lower overhead is only that, temporary.

Ask them for a proof first, let them show evidence.
.John.
Getting a host is out of the question, cause I have connections and know someone - and get hosting for free from this one company.

And the problem he said was mySQL - all the high CPU entries from mySQL were from my domain or something.

And this is 2.0.4 - not 2.1.

Speaking of which, the server was getting DDoS'd lately, but he said that has stopped.

Also, this isn't a "regular" installation. I have around 15 different modifications installed.

If they're stuff like Shop mods and Lottery, etc. - that's where your problem lies

How many queries is each page generating?
15 mods likely does put you into the resource hog category.
Munja
I seems one of them is the arcade mod, last i checked (donno if it is fixed but) there was one section in it that queryed a list of all the users then while looping through that a secondary query which could result in over 300 querys for the one page.

See if you can get the exact query that is causing the problem would help a lot in finding the "bad code" or disabling the high option
Michael_C
Edit- Ignore...
Antony
I wouldn't reccomend adding extra SQL queries unless you absolutly need to. Certianly 300 queries per page view is far too much and would cause a problem for many hosts.

No, I don't have either of these.

Board Index: 6 queries
Today's Active Topics: 7 queries
Topic View: 10 queries
Forum View: 8 queries

I do have the Arcade, yes.

As for finding out what exact query it is that's causing the problem, I'll ask tonight.

Im on a shared hosting server, and on my account I run about 10-12 dev. IPB boards and my main forum and resources arent hogged, and I got a couple of mods on like 3. So I think if one IPB is really hogging that much, you better find a new friend with a better server tongue.gif.

I am having this issue with my host too. This is what they say:
QUOTE
Upon being notified by our monitoring systems or by other clients located on the same server as you, we began to look into resource usage issues caused by your account. Please be aware that resource usage is NOT directly related to bandwidth usage and/or disk space usage. Resource usage is composed of CPU consumption, RAM usage, disk I/O usage, concurrent Apache connections, concurrent MySQL database connections and other system-intensive procedures.

After reviewing your sites and performing an analysis of your resource usage over a period of time, we have determined that the following aspect(s) of your account are the likely cause of the excessive resource usage:

Top Process %CPU 57.0 /usr/bin/php index.php
Top Process %CPU 55.0 /usr/bin/php index.php
Top Process %CPU 47.0 [php]Average persistent system resource use over 24 hours:
RAM / Memory: 5.65%
CPU.........: 12.27%

In order to mitigate further Quality of Service (QoS) issues on this server, we have disabled web access on your account. At the moment when users visit your domain they will receive a generic 403 Apache web server error message.

Our forum gets a lot of traffic. Would that cause IPB to be a resource hog?

PS: I have no add-ons installed.

Hello,

Please don't bump ancient topics original.gif Since the original topic, our policy on support here has changed, and we now require all support to go through either the client area, or our peer-to-peer resource site at http://www.ipsbeyond.com - if you aren't already a member of IPS Beyond, you can register for it via your client area too.

Thanks

I would recommend closing ancient topics, if you don't want them reopened!

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info.

They would have to close over 75% of the forum's topics then. thumbsup.gif

Yeah - since its an unofficial policy not to bump old topics, a modification to archive old topics over x days old where the last reply was over y days would be useful. I made one for a client once - easy to make as a task.
