On your mark, get set . . . $50 laptops
Apples for sale. Cheap.
Survey: Laptop program backed
A graphic-design student e-mailed from Poland.
Other requests came from Canada, Hawaii and beyond, in English and French.
Wanting a $50 iBook, the correspondents showered The Times-Dispatch and Henrico County schools with e-mails and phone calls after a story last month revealed that some used laptops could be available to the public.
At last, Henrico officials have divulged the details: 1,000 laptops will go on sale for $50 each on a first-come, first-served basis at 9 a.m. on Aug. 9 at the school warehouse, 361 Dabbs House Road, beside the county's Eastern Government Center.
There's a one-per-person limit, and only cash or checks will be accepted.
The PowerPC 750s are white and feature a 12-inch screen, 320 megabytes of memory, Mac OS 10.2.8 and AppleWorks 6.2.9, according to Henrico schools.
Jeremy Seftor, general manager at local retailer CapitolMac, said depending on the condition of the machine, it's "probably a great deal." He thinks the machines could fetch as much as $300 otherwise. "At $50 a shot, I'd buy several," he said.
The schools are switching to Dell laptops for high school students and teachers next year, so they are looking to unload some used iBooks. Graduating seniors were given first dibs on machines for $50 each, and about 1,100 students opted in, a school official said.
