That doesn't define who is or is not a celebrity...

I would hardly say Matt is famous. How many people in the world could tell you who Matt Mecham was? Few hundred, maybe few thousand tops? How many people could point at a picture of Matt and say 'That's Matt Mecham that is'. Somehow I doubt Matt gets mobbed by fans at the supermarket. Famous within his field (internet forums) maybe, but then again the amount of people who actively participate in that field ain't massive either.

Same can be said for those who are in sports. If I were to bump into a "famous" baseball player, for example, I wouldn't know it. But then again, I wouldn't care.

It just goes along with relation to interest. To a number of people, someone is a celebrity if they're well known and usually if they're well liked.
