I think their issue is that without the hyphen you might get confused as to whether long is modifying "lost" or "brother," even though I'd have a comma seperating the two if that's what I was up to.
I found my long brother.
I found my lost brother.
I found my long, lost brother.
I found my long-lost brother.
I dunno. Makes sense to me.
