A Jet Blue plane is going to be attempting a emergency landing in LA (berbank airport). The plane is now dumping fuel over the ocean, is is going to attemp a "soft field landing"

This could be interesting to keep an eye on, hopefully it is pulled off and no one is hurt.

The front landing gear on the plane is damaged, and most likely twisted.

147 people are on board. wassat.gif

I hope this everyone lives and no one is hurt.

The landing attempt is going to be live on tv too, all news stations have it live on tv at the moment.

Edit: I rushed this post and combiding a sentence I started with the last one and it didn't sound right, fixed now

ok now it's on cnn and msnbc... oh well, everything should be fine.

Yeah, it doesn't look like it will be that bad.

When the news first broke no news channel knew what was happening. But still, there is a chance this could go ugly. But ods are it will just be a rough landing.

According to, http://www.nbc4.tv/news/5004411/detail.html , they can't dump fuel but are flying around the airport as long as possible.

Also, I think it's landing at LAX, not Burbank.

Yeah, no one knows where it is going to land, I don't think they have picked a place yet.

I have even heard Onterio thrown up there as an option, lol
Skreid
Landing at 8:25pm EST (15 minutes).

I guess the landing is been pushed off more, its 10 minutes past the time it was supposted to try to land.
Skreid
Yep. Now msn is saying anytime between 9 and 9:45 EST (8:53 right now).

So, I guess whe just wait and see what happens.

The general thought of what will happen, is the front landing gear will colapse, and the plane will slide in on it's belly with a lot of sparks, but it won't be anything dangrous as long as it stays on the runway, if it vears off the side it could get very ugly.
Skreid
Now MSN says (on tv) it's going to land in a few minutes.
LoR*Evanescence
It's attempting to land any moment now.
Skreid
Plane has successfully landed.

The plan has now landed safely.

The landing hear did not colapse, but did grind along the runway giving out quite a bit of sparks.

I'm gussing some one beat me to this post, for some reason this thread took more then a minute to load when I went to post a reply getlost.gif

I was getting kind of worried... well, I'm very glad they've safely landed. original.gif

This is going to be a big hit for Jet Blue however...

EDIT: I've just heard the plane burst into flames... sad.gif

Since I live like 20 minutes from LAX, I drove along the I-405 watching. You could hear the screech and see the tires burning away. While I'm glad no one was hurt, I have to admit... It looked pretty cool. All in all, it really wasn't so bad. The pilots are trained to deal with things like these, so all went well!

The plane did not burst into flames. Its fine and everyone is evacuating it at the moment.

there goes 2 wasted hours. =(

was at the tv for 2 hours... i held by breath while it landed. glad everyone is ok. the last thing we need is more tragedies.
Dima
Glad this worked out well!

Conversely, I don't think it will be a big hit for JetBlue. The pilot was obviously very skilled - the way he approached the landing was excellent. He managed to keep the nose off the tarmac for a skillfully long period of time. It was absolutely perfect.

Unfortunately from time to time there are mechanical malfunctions for any airline.

You know, this could very well make JetBlue even more popular. It must look good on the company's part, showing they hire and train very good pilots..

I remember there was an incident here in LA back in 2000 where some guy stole Range Rover, and took it up and down I-5 for several hours after the front tires blew out. I remember a lot of Ranger Rovers being sold later, because people saw how durable the car was even without wheels.
princetontiger
i was thinking the same thing... they are fairing quite well while delta, and some other plane companies are filing a chapter 11.
THR
Yeah -- but that's for unrelated causes.
Michael_C
Good job they got it back on the ground safely. Being JetBlue it was an Airbus yes? Unless they've made some new purchases recently.

You wanted something bad to happen for your entertainment and then suddenly you're glad everyone is Ok? wassat.gif
GRANAT
Yes, it was an AirBus. I heard this same thing happened once before with the same plane model, so I hope they will investigate this better.

Most pilots are very skilled, as many are ex-fighter pilots. Oh well, glad everyone was safe.

I'm so amazed at the talent and confidence of the flight crew. That was a centerline landing! How creepy for the passengers to watch the thing unfold on MSNBC though! They said that was the worse part, because "experts" on the news were speculating that the gear would shear off and the nose of the plane dive into the runway. This is the first time I have heard of passengers watching their own plane on the news during an emergency.

And why would that be any more difficult than a usual landing? The gear only really comes into play once it is touching the ground. tongue.gif

It was far from the usual landing. He had to keep as much weight toward the back of the plane so as to come in as light on the nose gear as possible, so he didn't arm the spoilers or use the reverse thrusters, plus had to steer mostly with the rudder and light differential braking. This is why it took 9,000 feet of runway to stop. Too much braking or the deployment of reverse thrusters would shift the weight onto the strut for the nose gear, which could have collapsed and sent the nose of the aircraft into the runway. That's why it would be more difficult than a usual landing. wink.gif

I just watched the video on BBC and the pilots did an excellent job for the landing. The thing that annoys me most about this are some of the idiots over at a.net that were more bothered about the constant mistakes in the media regarding this, than the safety of those on board the plane.

Yep, that's why I avoided a.net during the incident. OTOH, there was a hilarious thread there when the A380 was close to it's first flight. It was pretty much mocking the people that were saying it couldn't possibly fly because it was too big, etc. I love satire.

Anyway, I agree that the lives are more important than the media's dialog. After all, they can't possibly be well-versed in every technology, so naturally they just do their best.
