Roulette is a DANGEROUS game because winning involves pure luck, but loosing involves nothing but persistance. The average statistical player of European roulette will lose 1/37th of their stake, whereas the average statistical player of American roulette will lose 2/37th of their stake. Luck can tip things either way, but statistically you're likely to lose.
Poker, with the right people / table can be *VERY* lucrative for someone who understands the game.

But as you said know how much you can loose and once you have lost it... WALK! Simple as.
All I play at the tables is roulette, and I win most of the time.
I pick one number, and bet $5-$10 on it. I keep playing that number until I hit, in the meantime I'll bet on even/odd and the colors to make up for lost chips. If red hits 3 times in a row, I bet lightly on black. If I walk in and notice red hit four or five times in a row, I'll bet heavy on black and usually I'll win. As long as I play the colors, I'll break even on the chips I lost betting a specific number.
And eventually, my number hits. I get my $370 plus what I have left of my other chips, cash out, and immediately leave to grab a meal and go home.
