With the new laptop it has QuickTime, which I find now comes with iTunes. Okay I can deal with that, been having fun with it. Why though does it automatically come with iPodService too?

The computer runs pretty well but I don't like alot of stuff I don't even use running in the background. Is there a way to remove ipodservice? I went into iTunes and looked for it in preferences but perhaps I missed it?

I'd like to remove everything I don't use but this was something that caught my eye first on task manager.

There is no uninstall unless I removed iTunes which would probably remove QT?

and no you can remove iTunes without removing QT and vice versa.

iPodService.exe is part of iTunes as is a service called Bonjour.exe which I very much doubt you need. They can be disabled via the Services snap-in in the Administrative tools folder of the control panel.

If I ever get an iPod maybe I will put it back.

I think Larry meant to post that you can't remove one without removing the other, as that's been my experience, but I could be wrong... I just see the "no" in there and figure "can" should have been "Can't".

What ticks me off is, I use the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, which includes support for Quicktime and Real... yet iTunes and AOL (Walmart's client) insist on installing the actual Quicktime and Real applications, although my system can already handle their supported files.

iTunes has bundled QuickTime at least since version 4.5.

I no longer use iTunes (though I do keep the latest build archived, just in case) mainly because I found out it couldn't write ID3 tags. I thought I was cleaning up my ID3 tags, moving my music slowly from one "untagged" folder into a "tagged" folder... until I go to use Winamp, and the "tagged" files were in fact untagged... iTunes just writes to its database, and uses that. That's just wrong. Plus the fact that it overrides mouse handling, doesn't let me use the wheel button for double-clicking... I don't like apps that fight with me or don't work right with other apps... so I canned it. Plus I don't use the iTMS or an iPod (I have a 40GB Zen, it doesn't support AAC anyway), so that's pretty much that for the time being...

MSCONFIG is an OK application, but as I've said before, if you make any changes with it, it will prompt you every time you boot your computer (unless you go back to MSCONFIG and roll back all your changes by changing Selective Startup to Normal Startup)... So I recommend Stephen's advice... better yet do Start>Run (or hold the WinKey and hit R) and type in SERVICES.MSC and hit enter... that's the shortcut to get to the same place.

There's an option on the MSConfig prompt (during boot-up) that will prevent it from reoccuring in the future.

Where are you getting this "Bonjour.exe"? That isn't a standard iTunes file unless that is a file distributed with versions outside of the US, which I highly doubt. You may want to check that file to make sure it is valid and really is part of iTunes. The only ones I was aware of are iPodService.exe and iTunesHelper.exe.

No Bonjour.exe came with my itunes version (v5.0), ms antispyware picked it up

But you're right, it wasn't bonjour.exe it was mDNSresponder.exe, the service and folder was called bonjour
