Are there any other young web coders out there on the IPB forums? I am just 14 and just wandering what other people my age have made/done/scripted, etc. I'm currently trying to make either a small cms or small forum/guestbook script at the moment not sure yet but it should keep me occupied seeing as it is my first ever PHP script

(not counting a Hello World one

).

You'll find a lot of people on here who have started young and probably also spend more time coding than is healthy.

I'm currently 15, but I started my first PHP project about two years ago. So what does that make me? A retired Young Web Coder?

I believe Veracon is really young aswell, he's a great web designer.

Young is relative I guess. To a lot of people, I am young.

I'm 19 now, but started out when I was about 14 ish.

I've been coding several quite big PHP projects and web designs, yet I have that 'never-getting-done' problem.

I'm 15, but I've been fiddling with [X]HTML/PHP/CSS etc well..since 1 or 2 years ago at a guess.
I probably started coding the sort of bad, invalid, horrible invalid HTML4 people code when they first code websites at about 11 or 12, and I think I may have started PHP around then too. (And don't even think about CSS)

lol i'm curious to know how all of you young whippersnappers got involved with coding in the first place
I see some of you stated that you started at the ages of 10, 11, or 12.....that's awfully young.....did any of you do anything else besides sit in front of the computer? Not meaning to sound critical or anything, but personally I think it's a bit unhealthy for a child to spend so much time in front of a pc instead of outdoors, enjoying childhood. Kudos to intellect, artistic skills, and abilities - but they won't keep you young. Our childhood years are much much shorter in comparison to the length of time we spend living as an adult. So get yourselves out there and enjoy it while you can.

Granted, more could be said about this, and I could very easily write a book on it; but in general, I think children need to spend more time outdoors, or participating in more "physical" activities. I mean, in general, when was the last time you've seen a 40, 50, 60 yr old playing dodge ball? lol When you grow older, you're not quite as "endurant" as when you are young. Being a mother, I tend to grow quite concerned about such activities - so I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade
I have 5 children, oldest is 14 yrs old...and thankfully he has no interest in the computer whatsoever ('cept to play games) - other than that, he does a lot of drawing, reading, riding his bike, camping, fishing, and hunting. According to reports I've read in times past, laziness seems to be a major problem amoung young people in today's times

I'm 12, I started coding IPB mods at 9, and I have already made $500 off PHP

Yes yes, I have started pretty young.
EDIT: Lisawc, I am 12, but I still do get tons of physical activity. My parents make sure of that. Every weekend I ride my bike for a few hours, and I walk my dog aswell. I am on my school's volleyball team, and we have the hardest coach ever. I am still a pretty good student, and if you ask anyone who knows me I just LOVE reading books. I do admit that I spend a bit more than a healthy time on my computer, but it is not all that I do.

I'm 15 and can do basic HTML & PHP, picked up HTML (3.2) when I was 14 and some PHP over the last year. Never really liked coding and tend to avoid it if possible though.
I'm fond of those who've learned to code so early, as I find it very difficult to keep up with.

That's great to hear, Michael

Sadly, there are a lot of parents out there that are not as involved with their children, so kudos to your mother and father.

My older two children love to read as well. They're really big into those HP books and anything relating to science. We have 3 really large bookshelves full of books, but oftentimes go to the library.

I used to worry about "outdoor opportunities" for my children, because we live in an area that's a bit restricted from when I was growing up; but they've managed just fine and have enjoyed life so far - already did the fort house thing, tree house thing, and now it's camping...heh.

I started learning HTML when I was 11, started PHP when I was 13. My first major projects in PHP/MySQL started when I was 14. I think I did a shoutbox and a mini-message board. Lately, I've written multiple client centers with tickets, a download manager (integrated with the client center), then this summer I wrote a complete CMS with many many many features that I finished one week before school started. It was the first PHP project that I actually finished (installer and all). It's going to be released as soon as I finish the website

. I'm 16 now, so I guess you could say that I started young

Started coding in QBasic when I was probably 35'ish, then moved on to Visual Basic @ 38'ish. Actually wrote a few programs that the Navy still uses (wish I would have written them as a civilian, could have gotten paid for it then). Tinkered around with PHP when I was with some company called IPS (

). Now at the ripe ol' age of 43, I'm more involved now with PHP/MySQL... usually out of boredom and trying to get the company I work for into the 21st century.
I have lint in my belly button older than most of you kids.

Don't know, whether I'm allowed to post in here, but'll try. I'm 30 right now and had my first contact with computers some 20 years ago in a state, that doesn't exist anymore

IIRC, since this time, my career road was always attached to computers - I started with entering example projects from magazines into machines, that no one can remember anymore and finaly graduated in computer science, started a company (with friends of mine) and am able to pay my bills
In the good old days, there was no such thing as "web" to our hands, but I discovered the "net" in the early 90's - using console mode, ftp, irc and "write" as the mother of all messenger services on some SS5 (Sun SPARC) and wasted a lot of time *g* My first own webpage started in 1995 and I have to admit, it's still online the way I left it these days. Of course, there were a lot of projects, some of them I even can't remember without looking in the archives - and some other ones, that still grow.
What about PHP? Well, it's just another language, I had to get the principles and syntax right (classical education pays off there) and I'm using it for about 5 years now for web purposes.
I could continue to tell tales from a lost century, but will finish here, as this is the topic for "young web coders", which I wish you good luck for your experiments and don't quit your efforts too early

Regards
Geraint

congrats on the winnings
since a few adults have replied to this thread, i'll throw in a little history myself

(1960's-1990's) Father worked for McDonnell Douglas (now part of The Boeing Company) as a programmer, then transferred to Sun Oil when I was 8 yr, and then transferred to Metier Systems (computer programming company) when I was around 10.
(1990's - current) Now he's a videographer, for both public and business (infomercials). Needless to say, I've been around computers my entire life. I'm 36 now, and didn't get my "own" first computer until I was 28 yrs old. Father tried to push the pc learning curve on me for years and years, and I refused...hehe

I loved painting and drawing too much to even think about applying my creativity to the likes of a computer. Now, it's a different story. Years ago, when all you had to look at was a DOS-looking screen, it didn't seem to me like you could do much with it - hence my lack of interest. But my father would make all kinds of stuff and show us (brothers and I). So I know you could get creative with it, but not anything like you can today - which is what I like about computers now (instant results and a more appealing "screen" to look at...heh)
And that's my "computer" history.........skinning and design history is saved for another chapter

I've made some attempts at coding, but have yet to find it my forte...that'd be television production.

But, started with HTML probably around 9 or 10, and then starting getting into Perl about 2000-2001, moreso when Ikonboard was around, and made the switch to PHP a bit before IPB was announced by Matt and Charles.

I'm 15 years old, been into computers my whole life. Always was interested in website design, but soon realized graphics design took a lot more patience than I have. I teamed up with Payton on these forums (he took the graphics route, I took the coding route).
When Payton was learning to advance his graphics skills I took up CSS and XHTML (before everyone started learning it, it was tough with no guides!) When we were becoming successful after starting our web development business, Payton started picking up XHTML + CSS while I started my journey to learn PHP and MySQL. I always asked for help on these forums, got the guidance I needed, and I've been involved with a few major projects. My speciality is forum skins for Invision Board, it being mainly CSS-based.
If I remember correctly, Payton is only 17.

Well I know I started this topic but I never really said what ages I started doing stuff. My Dad has always worked with computers (during my lifetime) so he has constantly been on them in my house. He first got me into the Internet around 10/11. Then i started wandering how to make my own website so I learnt HTML at 12. At 13 I fiddled with C++ and CSS but never really got anywhere (I know abit of CSS now). Then at the end of 13 I started my own web design business. I had one client and made £130 from it. After that, I couldnt be bothered to do random work for others anymore so I have been studying PHP and MySQL and I know a little bit but not much. I also know tiny bits of Perl as well. I'm now trying to code my own CMS even though I dont know that much PHP. I'm just learning the bits I need to know on the way whilst i make it.
