The Sci Fi Channel announced today that they have renewed Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis for the 2006-2007 season! Stargate SG-1 will become the longest-running US science fiction program as it enters its 10th season. New episodes of SG-1 and Atlantis begin filming in February 2006, and seasons 10 and 3 will begin airing next summer. The remaining episodes of seasons 9 and 2 will continue in January.

The quality dropped towards the end of season 6 and 7 but has been getting better with season 8 being a huge improvement over 7 and 9 being even better than 8, so its great to hear original.gif

SG-1, Atlantis Renewed

SCI FI Channel announced that it has ordered a 10th season of Stargate SG-1 and a third season of its spinoff series, Stargate Atlantis. Production on both 20-episode seasons is slated to begin in early 2006 for summer premieres on SCI FI.

Heading into a 10th season, Stargate SG-1 becomes the longest-running SF drama in American television history, outlasting The X-Files, The Twilight Zone and every iteration of Star Trek. The first half of SG-1's ninth season has averaged 2.4 million viewers per week.

Stargate Atlantis has averaged more than 2.3 million viewers a week for the first half of its sophomore season.

SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper will return as executive producers on both series.
Barn
Is 2.4 million viewers good then?

For the sci-fi channel, remember the sci-fi channel is basically a cult TV station
trekkie.
given that scifi isn't on the basic cable tier, it's pretty good.

I lost interest when SG1 stopped being SG1 this season.
Stephen
Thats basically what he said wink.gif

I have the season 1 through 8 on DVD (just got 8 when it came out at the beginning of the month). I am disapointed in 9 though as it seems to dip into some heavy spiritistic stuff with the Ori and stuff. Atlantis is pretty cool though, although different for sure.

Besides what im seeing in nine, I am a big fan of StarGate w00t.gif

Yeah it just isnt the same without Richard Dean Anderson... His "smart-ass" attitude, with his character, is just halarious.

I have season 1 through 7 on DVD, here in the UK we get a bit of a good deal/bad deal on the DVDs, although we get them before everyone else they are individual volumes, the box set doesn't come out until about 6 months after the rest of the world.

I on the other had really like the Ori story line, the Goa'uld story was beginning to get a bit repetitive. But I know what you mean about RDA sad.gif
DragonFire0729
RDA was my favorite character too, but I love the show still, just wish he was back more. Other than that, great show!
Munja
I love the Ori storyline, but i miss RDA.
Luke
I think some people may like the Ori story line because it's something different, but the way I see it (and this is just my opinion) they are going from parisites pretending to be Gods to spirit creatures acting like demons. May sound harsh, but that's pretty much what it comes down to... In my opinion the Ori is starting to ruin Stargate for me sad.gif. I would rather see season nine focus on the Rathe (if I spelled that right) from the atlantus series from Earth's perspective of the whole thing, and have some of them find there way there and fight them. Would be interesting original.gif

One of the things that bugs me most about Stargate is some of the cool things they could have done, or can still do. I know it's just a TV show, but it just seems flustrating. In season 8 that found that pod with Time-Travel abilities, which they still have (unless they lost it in 9 somehow already), and they could do some cool things. For example: The Tochra (again, not sure how to spell this) is a dying race and pretty much extict. In season 7 (i think) they found the Tochra queen which died and because of that planet they got Trotonen. Well couldnt they go back a little bit before she was discovered, clone the queen with the help of the asguard, put the clone in the place, go forward a little to make sure everything played out the way it should, then take the real healthy one back to their time? Or put her in stasis so they can find her again later healthy? Or how about go back and bring back some people that they lost like the Doctor with the cloning technology. An idea anyway.... Would create some interesting episodes whistling.gif

I'm not an avid Stargate watcher, but from what I understand, the last time they went back in time, they screwed things up royally and had to fix their mess.

Yeah, that happened in season 8 but when they fixed it the present them didnt have to do it, so the "present" them dont know they did original.gif. Plus if they took proper precautions they could prevent from doing so. I mean the idea of them brining life back to the Tochra would involve the Asguard anyway... With the cloning and switching and all... But then again they might be opposed to fooling with the time line, as an advanced race innocent.gif. But it's a TV show and anything can happen. Would be cool though cool.gif

Although I was a big fan of RDA, the new guy is doing a good job. He brings something different to the role.

I can't say im a big fan of the current storyline, mainly because its becoming less about advanced technology and more about "special powers".

The Goa'uld we're false gods and had alot of power, but they had the power through technology. Its still pretty good though, especially when they start to use technology more. Looking forward to the second half of season 9.

I don't get it... I liked Stargate when I saw it back in 1994. It was a damned good movie the first time, and held up on repeat viewings. I've even got the ultimate edition DVD with maybe 2 minutes added on. Then they start doing a series, but instead of putting it on TV, they put it on Showtime/Pay-Per-View. Then they put it on Sci-Fi, which is on maybe 1 in 100 homes which have satellite... I've never heard of a cable customer getting Sci-Fi unless they paid for it (like Showtime). Now they have a new Stargate movie out, Atlantis... and now that's a series as well?

I'm lost. Give me some good ol' Star Trek any day. I might have to download the Stargate episodes when I get back on high-speed, see what all the fuss is about. wink.gif

Atlantis doesn't have a movie, its a spin off of the SG1 series.
Luke
They may be true, but now SciFi comes with the basic (cheapest) cable installation with a dozen other channels now, alteast with Comcast.
Stephen
At last they've finally set a UK release date biggrin.gif Feb 13th for SG1, Feb 27th for SGA

the SG1 storyline for season 9 is excellent, i've enjoyed this a lot more than the current atlantis storyline. although, it's ok too...

As for the less on technology and more on spiritual, god like powers, i think that's an excellent twist, they've spent the last 8 seasons advancing their technology to defeat the bad guys only to come up even badder guys that their tech is useless against.

But... none of these two shows can top the all new battlestar galactica. the storylines with that at the moment are excellent, so many twists and turns with excellent suspense etc. woo!

Well, the local video store has a Stargate Atlantis DVD in the new releases section. It may be a pilot for that series (the Trek pilots and finales are all movie-length and movie-quality) but it didn't identify itself as an "episode". Though I'll concede that you probably know more about the Stargate series than I do, and I don't know exactly what it was I saw... just that it's a Stargate Atlantis DVD. wink.gif

I didn't say it in my last post, but it's amazing the Stargate series has gone on as long as it has. I watched both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, all the way through, in chronological order, and was amazed with both, particularly DS9, but both could have gone on for a few more seasons... but it seems Star Trek has a seven season limit, because that's as far as TNG, DS9, and VOY all go, despite room for further continuation.

So to me, that means that when (if) I do start watching Stargate from downloads/torrents, it will go on longer... it will take longer to watch, but it took me 4-5 months to watch each Trek series, so I'm prepared for a long haul. We don't have TV (well, broadcast... we don't have cable), and I absolutely hate watching a 45 minute program in a one hour time slot, with ads in between, and not being able to pause it or skip the opening credits. It's a terribly inefficient way to watch a show, and if you don't want to miss anything, it's problematic for a few reasons. I can honestly say that I watched every bit of those Deep Space Nine and Voyager episodes, and saw every scene. original.gif

In the US the pilot episode "Rising" was released as a seperate DVD like a movie

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009299P...9521432-6536867

You're right it is amazing just how long it has gone on, not least because of the trouble they had with showtime cancelling it, popularity dropping around season 5 (seasons 4, 5 and 6 were all pitched as possibly the last season) & major cast members coming and going (first Michael Shanks [Dr Daniel Jackson] although he returned after 1 season, then Teryl Rothery [Dr Janet Fraiser], Don S Davis [General George Hammond], Carmen Argenziano [Selmak/General Jacob Carter] and now Richard Dean Anderson [Colonel /General Jack O'Neill])
//Nathan
Yeah, that's exactly what they have in the video store. Actually I read the title as "Stargate: Atlantis Rising" as if "Rising" was part of the title. But I forgot that part.

That would weird me out, seeing James Spader and Kurt Russel's parts played by other people... but I guess they can't get big stars to do TV series.

My girlfriend is telling me that Stargate was totally ripped off in the Disney movie Atlantis... which is funny that the new Stargate series is called Atlantis. She saw the Disney Atlantis first, and then when we watched Stargate, she thought it was based on Atlantis (Disney, not the new SG series) until she realized Stargate came out first. Odd, I always wanted to see the Disney film, though I never saw any similarity between its trailer and what I knew about Stargate.
Luke
Well the lost city of atlantus is an anchient story thought to be a myth. So there's not really anyone to do it first because it's been around for ages. There are quite a few different producers who have used Atlantus and added their own little twist to it.

So did a search for the longest running Scifi show and found this post in Google (1st page). I now own season 1 - 8. My only problem is how on season 1, disk 3 (The Nox), you can't hear Apophis. Seems there was a setup error when they made the disk (amazon reviews & other sources agree).

At least downunder they have taken to releasing franchise seasons in two formats. 1) multiple sets for each season, cheaper per set but more expensive overall 2) the complete season as a 6 Disc bundle.

The pilot is movie length so conceivably they released it as stand alone to test the waters in your region.

For the person who got the movie DVD. Am intrigued. Purchased the Universal "2 Disc Ultimate Edition", which comes with the theater release and an extended cut. The extended cut has additional scenes, but simply repeats one scene at the start and midway through, which l thought was a bit of a con. How's your version look in this regard?

For anyone thinking on purchase the season editions downunder be warned they come sans special features, nothing but the shows. And if you wait a couple of weeks the ezy is releasing tins for seasons 1 and 2 of Stargate SG1.
