NEW YORK (SI.com) -- Beginning in 1998 with injections in his buttocks of Winstrol, a powerful steroid, Barry Bonds took a wide array of performance-enhancing drugs over at least five seasons in a massive doping regimen that grew more sophisticated as the years went on, according to Game of Shadows, a book written by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters at the forefront of reporting on the BALCO steroid distribution scandal.

(An excerpt of Game of Shadows that details Bonds' steroid use appears exclusively in the March 13 issue of Sports Illustrated, which is available on newsstands beginning on Wednesday. The book's publication date is March 27.)

The authors, Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, describe in sometimes day-to-day, drug-by-drug detail how often and how deeply Bonds engaged in the persistent doping. For instance, the authors write that by 2001, when Bonds broke Mark McGwire's single-season home-run record (70) by belting 73, Bonds was using two designer steroids referred to as the Cream and the Clear, as well as insulin, human growth hormone, testosterone decanoate (a fast-acting steroid known as Mexican beans) and trenbolone, a steroid created to improve the muscle quality of cattle.

If this does in fact turn out to be the truth, it will not only shatter the image/reputation of Barry Bonds but also that of baseball. Bonds' repeated denials of taking any kind of steroid...it seems like more and more major stars of the MLB are being exposed for their contact with doping.

I think a lot of people believed that he took steriods, even before this came out.

I always thought he was a good player. I remember his early days with the pirates where he was a decent hitter and a good fielder. When he started to destroy the ball at every at bat, he began to play bad in the field and his neck would get bigger by the hour. Plus, I think it was stated before that he took a cream, but didn't know it was steroids.

But yeah, I'm not sure if many people will be shocked.

If it does in fact end up being proven true - then to hell with him. I'm a huge fan of baseball and baseball history, and "superstars" like this inundate the game with their "I worked out in the off season - that's why I'm bigger and can see the ball better" crap.

A lot of people have incredible natural talent to play baseball at the professional level (especially the major leagues), but never get the chance because there simply isn't any room on the roster. Bonds was done 6 years ago, he should have stepped aside and bowed out gracefully.

I hope this story completely blows the lid off of every single person at the professional level who is bypassing the system by doing all these designer drugs to enhance their performance - and I hope baseball suffers because of it. It'll come back in due time - but for now, it has to stop.

Steroids can't improve your hand-eye coordination.

But he wouldn't be slugging them outside of the park the way he was doing without juicing. He looks like the Michelin Man, that's not natural.

Why did he put them in his butt? wassat.gif

Because some drugs have to be injected into your backside... It is a strange detail to put in, nonetheless.

If you're using intramuscular injections, the gluteus maximus is the easiest place to do it. Unless you're injecting yourself, in that case probably your quads are easier.
