Greetz!
I am currently in the process of restructuring my website and also thought about switching from plain HTML files to a database driven system. My experience with content managing systems is not that great and I also have some people in my team who never worked with CMSs, so therefore, I am looking for a rather simple tool that doesn't have a steep learning curve. For this reason, I think that Typo3 is not really suitable because I read some reviews which state that while Typo3 is very powerful, it takes some weeks until you understand everything.
So, what CMS do you guys recommend for a beginner? Some of my favs. are Joomla!, Plone and eZ publish.

Forget Plone... I just checked and my webserver does not support Python and the hosting company has no plans for adding support.

In my opinion,
Website Baker is hands down the easiest content management system I've dealt with.

TYPO3 is the best imho, however not so easy to use. So I dont think it would suit your needs.

Will you have forums on your site? The reason why I ask is I spent a little time reading (emphazie little) about each of the above mentioned CMS's. Some looke really cool, but to get things there are hidden costs for such things as add-ons or bug fixes. I didn't see any of them with integration for forums either, but then if your not running them who cares.
May I suggest SubDreamer, it is very simple to use and not as complex as the others but it does the job with no hidden costs and the community is very active in building it out...its come a long way in the last year alone.
Enjoy your search...
