Hey,
I have a question. I hope it will be answered because my site is depending on this answer soon, as my site launches on the 9th May 2007 and alot of things need to be done. Well, my thing is:
I have 2 IPB's (Seperate Licences), they run on different MySQLs, they are on the same host. I want for my members to do what I hope Converge will do for me: I want it so that if a member registers on one forum, it will register on all, I also want it so user names will be the same on all (to stop ID stealing).
I am not interested in keeping usergroups etc. As I am want to keep these sites as separate as possible (The same login is for security). Will converge be able to suit what i'm after?
Thanks,
ThompsonLoz

Converge cannot directly share the member names I'm afraid - only email and password.
There will be "plugin" functionality for Converge and IPB 2.3 which we've added in - you would then be able to pass and use any data you want (including names) but it would need to be custom developed.

I could handle people logging in with their emails...But for example:
I am ThompsonLoz on here, if you made a new random forum which was with this converge, would I be ThompsonLoz on there?

Not automatically. The first time you login to the new random forum, you would be asked to specify your display name - if that name is available, then you could indeed use the same name on both sites. But the software won't pass over your existing display name (Converge itself doesn't deal with names) so the possibility does arise that someone else could have taken the username before you.

I suppose I could put a rule on my forum saying '1 Name fits all'...Or even a custom profile field. Thanks. =D

what happens if "dispalay name" option is disabled on both boards?

Display name cannot be disabled on both boards if you use Converge. It has to have SOMETHING to show in posts, and since you are using email for logins, it has to prompt for a name somehow.

well, it makes sense
is it possible to lock display name, once it's been setup so it works as login
you cannot change it unless you register new account
i dont use converge at the moment and i disabled display name
i found it very confusing people changing it from time to time
how can you tell who is who when it happens

I believe there is a setting where you can restrict a usergroup from changing their display name; (Try looking under that particular usergroup in the ACP)

It's under group settings, but questions like that are best left for IPS Beyond.
