I have to wonder if they are actually that stupid or if they were just being mean.

The question is "What is it that orbits around the Earth?" and the answers are the Moon, the Sun, Mars and Venus.

Looks like they were serious because if it had meant to be mean spirited I think we would have had some D answers as well. Pretty weird.

The music indicates it was one of the later questions, I didn't realizing that knowing the Moon orbits the Earth was worth some $32,000 or so.

I can't believe that... I thought it was in everyones general knowledge.

The contestant and audience's confusion is easy to explain. The French [and the Americans] both believe that they are at the centre of the universe and therefore EVERYTHING orbits around them.

And where, my friend, are you from that doesn't suffer from this mentality?

At the centre of the universe of course, which is why I know that there are no French [or Americans] here.
