yay, I recently bought a mac pro here are the specs:

3.00 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
1GB 667 DDR2 FB DMM ECC-2x512
3xNVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s drive
16x SuperDrive DL
Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mse-B
MAC OS X-INT
Country Kit-B
3 yr Guarantee/Warranty

I plan to upgrade the ram to 8gb or even 16gb if needed. The nvidia cards I will see how they are, if they don't reach my expectations I am intending to get the Quadro FX, but may wait due to apple may have something up their sleeve. I also intend to getting a few additional hdd's and enforcing raid 5, and eventually a blu-ray drive (hopegully a blu-ray/hd-dvd) combo. I was debating to wait until Leopoard was released however just completed university forever original.gif and since the opportunity arose for me to save a few pounds on the system by using my university discount, anyway cannot wait 11 days till it gets delivered to me original.gif

The 3 cards are for sli, I will be using that in windows due to the fact osx doesn't have sli. This machine will not be used for gaming very much incase anyone was wondering tongue.gif

What do you plan to do with the Mac Pro that would require 8-16 GB of RAM?
idav
nvm. grrrr....

*I'm editing my original comment back in after I just went to Apples website and priced out his machine. I think zxsecure needs to hear it.*

More money than brains, have fun with your toy.

Ha ha lol, well i could get an imac and have to sell it to someone at a later timelike 2 yrs later maybe and then buy another whereas the mac pro allows me to upgrade, also you can't have functions like raid or the upgrades I want to add, for the question what will i do with 8gb or 16gb of ram well I plan to do more intensive work in regards to computing, I don't want to drop the bomb yet because thats my business secret tongue.gif Atm my sony can barly run photoshop without lagging so I was in need of some power, I would rather spend £2460 - which is what I paid and get the future possibilities with the machine rather than having to buy another in a years or 2 years time.

Here is a hint I would like to do some flash work which incorporates sound, so need a good machine for sound and video editing.

How is it any of your business what people do with their money?

He's a skinner, and so I'm thinking he's into other multimedia uses too. Though I don't know if Photoshop is multi threaded, it should be a beautiful work machine with no lag. Otherwise you're looking at good multi-tasking and movie/music making.

Where as I've done Photoshop on a dinky 700mb RAM 1.0ghz laptop for the longest time, poster size and quality images. Now that is fun. I would have loved to use a machine like this though.

BTW: Download Folding@Home. ;D
SwitchFX
So this cost you what like 13 grand?

You'll never need 16gig of ram, thats crazy. I have 8 gig installed here and it was a waste of money. because I could have stuck with 2-4 gig and got the same performance I'm getting with 8gig.

Save your money

Well Will is right, thats my plan, I havn't bought the ram yet and was going to see what its like with the default amount. Lol Fantastic it cost me £2,460 which is like 2 and a half thousand pounds.

I've seen it advertised for £1600, why did you pay so much for it. Did you buy extras or something.

You probably saw the mac pro using dual core processors advertised, this is a quad core the lowest cpu powered ones are 2x 2.66ghz using dual core.

The default also has 1 nvidia card and no guarantee/warantee. If you tick all of the options it adds up to a lot. So Ill upgrade where and when I need too.

The closest thing to what I have costs: £3,058.00 (thats with the 1yr guarantee) - from the average store (not business or student).
Since I got a student discount I called them and they helped me out original.gif With that said I am a old customer since I have a old iMac G4, a .mac membership and a ipod.
MRGTB
yeah, I see your point. Also I didn't realise all the extras you add up the price.

I could say quite a lot about that question. But the simple answer, it isn't.
Michael Boutros
What exactly could you say about it? He wants to buy a Mac Pro, he can. He wants to donate a million dollars to pudding research, he can.

Anyways, congratulations on your purchase, it is one heck of a sweet machine!

Damnit, why didn't he put the money into pudding research, what a jerk!
Chris T
Research into pudding is an extravagance at best. Pudding has already reached its zenith with the rice pudding.
Michael Boutros
But it's just milk and rice. What about milk, rice, and chocolate. Yes, you heard it here first. Real Rice Pudding.
Quillz
Do people actually use the Mac Pro as a personal computer? Or is marketed solely as a workstation/server?
Brandon C
Enjoy the Mac Pro! It's definitely a great machine, and I love our families' Mac Pro!

Sweet!

Not getting the RAM from Apple was a good call. They want like $4499 for 16 GB when you can get it for $1400 on newegg... And what doesn't make sense to me is the 750 GB hard drive is $250 more as a primary drive, yet a second/third/fourth is $499..... Newegg it's around $230-$250.

I'm thinking about getting one for video production.

What you are forgetting is that when you get the 750 GB drive as your primary drive you can remove the cost of the original primary drive from the components list wink.gif

Oh! So they are $499 then...

It's a great system, but you're better off buying the hard drives and ram separately. Maybe even the video card shocked.gif

EDIT: Actually the video card doesn't seem to bad for the price offered..
