GARDNER, Mass. -- A small plane crashed in a heavily wooded area near Gardner airport on Saturday, injuring the three people on board.

One of the crash victims suffered severe head trauma and emergency helicopters rushed the three to hospitals for treatment, Gardner Fire Department's Lt. Stephen Fredette.

Firefighters used chain saws to reach the crash site and metal cutters to extricate the victims from the plane. The aircraft crashed 50 feet off the road, and firefightes spent an hour hacking their way to the victims, Fredette said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the plane to crash near the Gardner Municipal Airport. Visibility was good and conditions were fair in the area at the time of the accident, he said.

There were no reports of fire at the site. Firefighters sprayed foam to cover the vaporizing fuel leaking from the plane.

The wooded area is located between Gardner and Templeton towns in central Massachusetts.

The airport mostly handles small aircrafts. About 29 planes are based there, including 27 single-engine planes and one ultralight.

Technically, it was across the creek from my property line, but..

So, the next time someone yells at me for not noticing that you did already give the information I'm asking for in a ticket.. I'm not exactly that observant.

Oh yeah, well I can top that! I built the plane from raw natural resources back in 1992 and intended it to crash on the morning July 19th 2007!! biggrin.gif

It's wonderful that the three passengers all survived the crash!

Actually more common than you'd think. Especially from Cuba. The pulled a guy half frozen out of the wheel well of a plane from Cuba to Canada a while back.. Lucky bastard actually lived..

That's what I don't understand.. How someone can survive.. It's like 40 below at 30k feet, and on top of that, there's the little problem of a lack of oxygen.
