An underground steam pipe explosion tore through a Manhattan street near Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday, swallowing a tow truck and killing one person as hundreds of others ran for cover amid a towering geyser of steam and flying rubble. The OEM is telling people to avoid the East Side near Grand Central because of possible hazardous material and asbestos concerns.
That is a massive hole

No doubt there would have been some brown racing streaks in my underwear had I been in the area. :'(
Anybody here live in/around that area?

I don't have any friends that live in Midtown, but I do have some that live in Greenwich Village and the surrounding neighborhoods, and I'll ask them about it. Anyway, I first saw this on the evening news yesterday, and thought that it must have been horrifying for people in the immediate area to witness that, and I would have been very scared as well myself if I would have been there! However, I watched the news about 15 minutes ago and they said that the steam "shot up as high as 80 stories," and it showed the tow truck it swallowed, as well as two city buses and a taxi that were lucky enough to stop just short of the explosion. They reported this morning that the area had been evacuated by last night, and that this morning they did air quality tests and showed no dangers in the air, so that's good. But I'm sure the area's still evacuated as of now.

I feel really bad for the poor driver of that tow truck. He's in a lot of pain right now :-(
