Any chance that we see Video BLOG?

It starting to be popular original.gif
amusis01
I have to agree completely. IP Blog's media management is very inadequate for this age of multimedia blogging. I'll put my thoughts in another post, but for now I agree that the lack of video blogging (in simple English, uploading and inserting videos into a blog post) makes it just another last-generation blogging tool.
bfarber
You guys realize this is possible already right?

Create a custom bbcode to play the videos (might need one for each media type, i.e. mpg, wmv, etc.)
Upload the video via attachments
Insert the video using the custom bbcode

Unless you're thinking of something else?
BryanH
I think they're looking for an easier way to accomplish this. Something like an "Insert Video" button on the RTE that users can click on and that's it.

Quite right, Bryan. It amazes me how many people forget that the people who use CMSs are ordinary people- non-geeks. BB Code indeed! Any CMS that can't be used without knowing some sort of code is abslutely useless to 99.99% of the human race.

I agree as well... I just don't understand what's the big deal or logic behind about not adding user friendly interfaces for non-tech-savvy users? All of our questions are always mostly answered with "well you can creatively use this method" or "you can creatively modify the skin and such" or "Nothing is wrong with it, that's how it is designed"... That's cool and all for webmasters but what about the average mom, old fart, newbie. member & visitors of our sites? I'm pretty much tired of trying to teach people how to use bbcode and teach them work-arounds for obvious things that should really be there compared to available software out there on the market.

With BBcode, html and etc IMO... You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink from it.

In this day in age of competitiveness when people click a button to insert a video they honestly are expecting a dialog box asking for the video url. I believe and would say that more than half the people out there in this world wouldn't even know what to do if they see [youtube][/youtube] show up in the editor when composing a post lmao tongue.gif

There was a flash plugin to record video online long time ago.

Well "Quick Access" for example hosts:
  • Insert: Center
  • Insert: Topic Link
  • Insert: Post Link
  • Insert: CODEBOX
  • Insert: SPOILER
  • Insert: Acronym
I have to ask seriously what is quick about some of the items listed in it and the advantage of using them over the buttons in rte for example? Insert topic & post link...Serously by the time I scroll back to find out what the topic number is I'm already at the point of cut & pasting it. These two are not quick IMO. Same goes for center and codebox as those are already on the rte and using the quick access is an extra step or two. And acronym? That one is just beyond me as to why someone would want to go through the effort just to add lol to their post.

However adding useful stuff there such as the below would be very very cool of course all with the appropriate UI for adding content:
  • Insert: Video
  • Insert: Audio
  • Insert: Gallery
  • Insert: Nofollow
  • Insert: Tag Cloud
  • Insert: SPOILER
bfarber
Firstly, you have to remember that Blog does not have it's own entirely separate RTE. It uses the same one IPB uses, and thus is going to share aspects of the main forum RTE.

The problem, then, is separating what is for blog and what is for the forums..

If you use the RTE, maybe. Not everyone does. Firstly, codebox is not on the RTE anywhere and is only accessible via the "quick access" menu. Acronym I think is mostly just an example to show people how it works. wink.gif Feel free to remove it in the custom bbcode manager. Post and topic links are necessary, and yes people do use them. They can be removed from the menu mind you, but they need to remain in the system.

Tag cloud....you first have to support tags, no? Tag cloud would be tricky making into a custom bbcode...

Insert Gallery is interesting, but it's just not easily possible right now. Our custom bbcode manager needs a major overhaul before it would be possible.

Video and audio are a bit more complex too - there are multiple formats and each format uses a different object/embed sequence. You'd either need a custom bbcode for each format, or an intermediate player that can handle all formats you want to allow to be embedded into the post. Both are possible now, but are harder for US to release for use with the software.

My apologies as that was a global suggestion and the ideas I planted there I think can be used globally? The features I mentioned was also an appropriate UI (user interface) to go along with it via some javascript on click. As for the purpurse of "Quick Access" I was thinking more less changing it's purpose all together. I did leave spoiler in my example but I forgot to detail my version of spoiler. This would change from a bbcode version to something more similar to a hide hack where the viewer would need to login to see the hidden content(very simple and clean). The bbcode version spoiler would still be available(just not in the list) but this was just another version of it.

I was only pointing out that that it's much faster to just cut & paste or use the insert hyperlink. If they need to remain in the system is understandable, but as a feature suggestion... Can we utilize the "Quick Access" for some of the highly requested features that members go on and on about? For example the Video insertion, I know it's not feasible or possible to add support for every single video format out there... However youtube seems to be pretty popular and you could leave at that supporting only vid insertion with similar embed links. I'm not asking for you guys to add in support for some never heard of video stream that no one has ever heard of before. I just think youtube and similar is all that's necessary and if someone wants more then they need to mod themselves for it.

You say codebox is not anywhere in the RTE but yet "codebox" and "code" appears to me functions exactly the same... view edit this post and you will see I used them both. Unless I don't understand their real purpose and if that's the case please teach me what it is?

CODE
function get_session_variables()
{
return array( '1_type' => 'links',
'1_id' => $this->ipsclass->input['id'],
);
}

CODE
    function get_session_variables()
    {
        return array( '1_type' => 'links',
                      '1_id'   => $this->ipsclass->input['id'],
                    );
    }

I do see that codebox adds a huge space at the bottom but I have no idea why it does that or what it's for?
China J
Ah never mind about codebox explaination... I just did some testing and it looks to add a scroll to code correct? This one should really be added to the editor lol for all those guys who decide to post the whole page of edits. tongue.gif

Yes, that's the difference with codebox (adds scrollbars).

I, personally, want to see the custom bbcode manager seriously overhauled for 3.0, at which point a lot of this stuff would become much easier. For instance, right now custom bbcodes are parsed before they are saved to the database (not displayed). It used to be done vice versa. For the vast majority of custom bbcodes, it's preferable to parse once to save on resources when viewing topics, but there are some that need to be parsed on display (i.e. hide hack), so I'd like to see these options added to the bbcode manager. Further, ability to use php plugins or execute php code would be nice.

Unfortunately, a lot of that has to wait on IPB.

I agree blog needs this and needs to be more user friendly.

Also if it is accomplished by adding something to RTE in the future, I sure hope it would then have separate RTEs for forums and blogs, becuase otherwise it will be just another added feature that could be used in forums, thus people wondering why even use blog. Blog needs things that can't be done in forums or why would they even use it instead of simply creating a personal topic?

User friendliness is the big problem with many areas on IPB. For example the UCP has so many links and is not wrll-organized and I am sure many members get confused where to go when they want to change x, y, and z settings. I myself even forget exactly which link to click to get to the setting I want and I have been using Invision myself or on other sites for at least several years.

With blog and gallery, it's just not easy to explain what needs to be more user friendly. Things just don't "feel" right, but are hard to put into words.

How about video commenting using free services like seesmic or riffly.

Integrating with one of the video commenting services is something I've thought about for 2.0. I'm not really convinced that there is much value in video commenting, but it is something that we will take a look at original.gif

support video blog and user friendly +.

Less people will know to use bbcode or html.
