QUOTE
A Saudi man divorced his wife for watching alone a television programme presented by a male, an act he deemed immoral, the Al Shams newspaper reported on Saturday.

The man, whom the paper did not identify, ended his marriage on the grounds his wife was effectively alone with an unrelated man, which is forbidden under the strict Islamic law enforced in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the paper said.

Men in Saudi Arabia have the authority to divorce their wives without resort to the courts.

I guess it kind of makes sense in very conservative, very vague ways. Overall, though, at least in California, 50% of marriages end in divorce, so I'm sure there have been other odd reasons for couples getting divorced.
Santa Garcia
I guess he can go and have 4 more wives.

That 'Barneys Girlfriend'! Watching TV alone? Is she insane?

I can see getting a divorce is she was watching something like the View, but this is just silly. tongue.gif

What you have to understand is that this is silly in your eyes, but to them it's not, it's their way of life and the Islamic woman would have known what she was doing - not saying she accepted it, but she knew what she was doing. I think it's very wrong, but I'm sure they think some of the things we do are also very wrong.

Yes, and murdering someone in cold blood is immoral in my mind but I should understand that Murderers feel differently and try to coexist with them. It's like, groovy, man.

And my joke about divorcing a wife that watches the View is affected by this how? unsure.gif

I don't find the being alone thing silly... I find being alone with someone on TV silly. I can understand being alone in person... but... TV!? unsure.gif

Don't worry, some of us can read, it isn't as if you quoted him or even mentioned his name. It is fairly obvious that your post was just a reply to the topic rather than the poster before you wink.gif

p.s. I was being kind of sarcastic before anyone says "OMG stop being an ass", or something similar wink.gif

On topic though, this is rather extreme but it doesn't surprise me in the least. Remember women aren't people, they are property, they are owned by their husbands and must do what their husbands demand.

Also worth pointing out that a stupid reason like this could be used in the UK too, you are entitled to give any reason for divorce here. Wouldn't surprise me if there's been some equally daft reasons given.
idav
Well you can divorce your spouse in the US for any reason too. I assume that's the same in most places. Who is a government entity to say that the reason you have for divorce isn't good enough? I would assume that this isn't uncommon, but I'm sure there probably are some places where it has to be justified to the public.
