So I get this email from the Human Resources department this morning...

Friday, Feb 1 is National Wear Red Day

With 460,000 women dying each year, heart disease is still the #1 killer of women in America. But you can do something - for your health, for your life, for the women you love.
Go Red For Women is a way to increase awareness of this effort to educate women regarding their cardiovascular status and heart disease. It engages women and the men who love them to embrace the cause! Show that you care and wear red!

Thanks to the participation of millions of people across the country, the color red and the red dress now stand for the ability all women have to improve their heart health and live stronger, longer lives.

Help us continue to fight the statistic. Whether it's visiting your healthcare provider, wearing red to show your support on February 1st, or shopping for products that support the cause and joining the movement in your community or involving your company.

I think this is great, but...wait...aren't we missing something very important? Heart disease is the number one killer of ALL HUMANS in this country. Not just women. Why make such a fuss about raising awareness when the message is rather disingenuous and suggestive by it's very nature that this is only a problem for women?

Something tells me that this is more about selling products than raising awareness. Men don't seem quite as interested in bright erd handbags and scarves.

Yeah, but you don't have to have events for one disease at the expense of another. This campaign doesn't exclude a campaign about heart disease. They can both co-exist.

I'm not particularly offended or upset about it. It just doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

Yes, licks are how we measure both the quality of hard candy on a stick and logic below the Mason-Dixon line.
