Normally I'd be happy that school was closed - but this means that a test I had is postponed until next week when I have 3 other tests. Anyone else experiencing inclement weather?
Stephen
Nope. They've been forecasting snow for today all week, both here at work in London and at home on the South coast. Even at 6:30am this morning that were forecasting snow.

It is a bright sunny day, which is what I predicted would happen

QUOTE
15:44:21 Stephen: oh christ, snow tomorrow pinch.gif
15:44:57 Dan C: blizzarding here currently
15:44:58 Dan C: !
15:45:13 Stephen: a) I live in the south, we rarely get snow
15:45:32 Stephen: b) I use the trains, they make excuses when it rains, what is snow going to do to them wink.gif
15:46:00 Dan C: we don't either
15:46:03 Dan C: york is in a hole
15:46:17 Stephen: oh
15:46:22 Stephen: I see
15:48:01 Dan C: Indeed, not good news
15:48:29 Stephen: working from home tomorrow then wink.gif
15:48:55 Stephen: now I've said that it is going to be 28 degrees
15:52:16 Dan C: lol
15:52:16 Dan C: indeed

Obviously I didn't literally mean 28 degrees, comic exaggeration wink.gif

It was bitterly cold last night, was thinking they might be right. Thankfully they weren't. original.gif

Anyway, good luck on the exams.
Rikki
I saw freezing rain for the first time ever today!
idav
lol they don't have freezing rain in Brittania?

Our schools opened 2 hours late but of course I still had to be there on time.

Nope, not that I've ever seen anyway. The gulf stream tends to prevent the conditions necessary for it from happening.
Stephen
What on earth is freezing rain?

Don't say, rain that is frozen.
idav
Rain that HAS frozen.

Thank you thank you, I charge by the laugh...

I'd go out and snap some pictures if my camera battery wasn't dead. Maybe Rikki can show you.

Essentially it's when it rains and the water freezes before really absorbing into the ground. This coats everything with a increasing layer of ice. So for instance if you walk through a grassy field it will be crunchy because ever single blade of grass is sheathed in ice. Every branch of every tree, and unfortunately every power line.

Are you sure it doesn't happen in the UK and you all just call it something different?
BlakeC
I let my dog out this morning and it refused to walk on the crunchy grass...was quite funny.

Freezing rain does stuff like this to your car.

This global warming is getting to me.
idav
I would think as rainy as it is over there that this would be more common in the UK than here. Now I'm interested.

So far this year we have had a total of one snow day and two 2 hour delays. No snow right now in Boston although we had a couple good storms, made some small cash shoveling driveways and using a snow blower. We did have some flurries earlier this week but it was nothing more then 3 inches. Thank goodness I don't live in VA anymore heard they haven't gotten any snow at all in the Richmond area - kinda sad except I wouldn't expect to snow there anyways.

I think this is the first year I have experienced a lot of snow since I lived in Long Island and New York city about 4 years ago. Love the snow.
Stephen
From some Google searching and looking at the met office website apparently we do get it, but it is typically to such a minor degree that no one notices it and it is over very quickly. More major cases are rare, January 1996 apparently being the last big case, prior to that January 1987, February 1986 and January 1940.

But typically we get sleet in those conditions. As freezing rain is still liquid until it comes into contact with the frozen surface you get these interesting landscapes as it has time to dissipate somewhat http://www.phy.bris.ac.uk/groups/nanophysi...zing%20rain.jpg but as sleet isn't liquid it turns to ice as soon as it comes into contact with the surface and doesn't have time to dissipate, this is what we call black ice

Same as Stephen - snow predicted, yet the sky is completely blue here.

Well freezing rain usually doesn't effect the roads. I guess if it were colder it would be snowing or sleeting. But it's pretty much exactly 32f out there so it just rains (Since the storm system above is slightly warmer) and then freezes once it is moisture on the ground.
idav
Yaller saying this doesn't happen in the UK?

Never seen that in my life! Well, there was one year (probably 1996) when we had ice like that.

It's not even raining...
Rikki
Nope... really the only time we get icicles is when we've had snow, and it begins to melt, but freezes as it drips.
idav
That is so weird. I just don't get it. I always kind of rationalized the occurance as an in between stage of rain and snow. You all have rain, and you have snow. wassat.gif wacko.gif

Must find more info...

Our favourite topic is the weather, but yet we have the most dull climate. Says something about British culture...

I'd say sleet is the inbetween stage, and we have that. I think it's probably because we're a small island, so there's not enough area to have the cold ground/warmer atmophere effect happen. It rolls off the atlantic either warm, or cold. Same reason we don't get hurricanes or tornadoes to any great extent too, I expect.

I hate being a human weather vein right before a storm like this hits my knee aches with unbarable pain I could hardly sleep last night

Heres what the storm system over top of us looks like right now Fire up your snow blowers!

Yes I have a day off today too.

If anyone is confused sleet is frozen when it falls from the clouds and freezing rain freezes when it reaches the ground.

And if your note sure which to forecast, you call it a "wintry mix".

I wish we could get a good snow fall. We haven't had enough to have a productive day of sledding yet.

Lynchburg gets snow, occasionally. Manassas / Chantilly get some freak 3-4 inchers from time to time, just enough to build a decent snowman.
zigs
We have a bright sunny cold day here, very rarely get snow where I live cos of the sea, but when we get the odd inch the whole of Swansea shuts down and people panic buy milk and bread.....

I wouldn't say the British climate is dull. We don't get the extremes of American weather sure but we have the most changeable and unpredictable weather on the Earth. I was talking to a girl on my course called Jen (not actually her real name, just trying to protect some identities here wink.gif) yesterday, she is from Poland on an exchange, and is hot. Therefore in my head I call her Hot Polish Jen . Or HPJ for short. We had the following exchange.
QUOTE
HPJ: What's with this rain? We don't get this in Poland.
Me: Its winter. Its pissing it down. Its normal here.
HPJ: But it was sunny the last few days!
Me: Yup. Keeps yer guessing dunnit? That's why we talk about the weather so much.
HPJ: It is very irritating, I never know what to wear.

I will not repeat what I said next as children may be reading....

Anyways we don't appreciate it here, but British weather is interesting because it keeps yer guessing. Why today in Plymouth it has been sunny, rainy, and windy. All during different points. It has been most irritating.
Michael Boutros
I wish the snow day would be Monday, because either way this week is exam week and there was no school (for me) on Wednesday, Thursday, and today. But looking out my window I can see how crazy it is, and I wouldn't be surprised if some people thought that school would get cancelled next week.

We've got little snowflakes again, had the same yesterday - and it's pretty cold, but it's not sticking.

Yes in the beginning of the week they said Wintry Mix, and the day before the storm changed it to Ice and Rain. I don't trust the weather people anymore though...

It's been a pretty strange day here, that's for sure.

I had a job interview earlier, wasn't what I expected but walking outside at 9am the clouds was fairly cloudy and it looked like the sun was going to burst through. (it did on and off) After the interview, it was pretty chilly and the wind was getlost.gif well freezing! It was like I dreamt what I first went out in and I caught a tram to outter town near where I live and it started raining. (slinging it down)

That stopped pretty much when it started, maybe a few minutes.

However, walking back after catching the tram system again to visit my parents it became windy and very cold. I actually made a joke, my brothers snow mad and often winds my father by saying "Is it cold enough to snow" and I wished I didn't say it!

I love snow don't get me wrong, we got hit while walking through a park by a misty snow storm. very powerful wind and the ground looked like something out of "the day after tomorrow" and fairly big flakes. It didn't settle though, I hear andy might of been hit by "quite" a lot though as my brothers girl friends from derby and mentioned they'd had a few inches.

Yesterday where I live we just kept getting a lot of hail stones, it was also very windy.

Thankfully I wasn't outside at any of the times that the hail stones came down.
BASHERS33
My degree is actually in meteorology. I kind of got burnt out on the topic, but a lot of interesting things have happened lately.

For example, where I live, in the past week or so we had 2 winter weather advisories, a tornado watch, a wind advisory, 2 freezing fog advisories (I don't remember ever having one of those before), a high wind warning, and one day the temperature dropped 30 degrees in a little more than an hour.
elj
And alas, I woke up this morning and there was a lovely thick coating of snow everywhere. This is probably because I live down a hill - it's mostly gone now, but it settled. biggrin.gif
BASHERS33
I wonder if the groundhog saw his shadow. He seems to every year.............
♠ Charles
Weather channels and such have been wrong since the beginning of January here, no snow since early December. Only rain and sunshine.(Furthest Coast East, NJ)
BASHERS33
note: the groundhog did see his shadow. shocker. lol

None at all here as usual getlost.gif

lmao this weatherman was just coughing and i think he accidentally hit the screen when pointing at the map and he kept not being able to stop laughing when trying to tell the foreceast.

We have a tornado warning and they just said to go the lowest floor and stay away from any glass and I was upstairs looking out a window. lol

Would you be living in this area? It said many people were injured from the tornadoes and that about 5+ tornadoes touched down.

FrostedPopTart
There were about 2 dozen people killed in tornadoes yesterday, making this one of the biggest February tornado outbreaks ever. Many major cities, and even more smaller ones; were affected.
