With IDM throwing everything into 1 folder, backing up that folder is a pain in the butt. So what I am suggesting is a monthly folder that can make backing up easier. If we have folders such as

02/08
03/08
04/08
.
.
.

Then when you want to back up you only need to do the most current folder, It would be nice if the system also detected empty folders and deleted them. So if you have files that get updated a lot , if a folder gets emptied it will disappear from the structure.

Am I making sense on this???? unsure.gif

You are. This is how it's done in the uploads folder on IP.Board for new uploads. I don't think that itdeletes empty folders though. That feels dangerous. unsure.gif

I dont keep revisions on my IDM, So lets take the following....

02/08 = Has one file inside named Filename1.ext

In March a user updates that file with a new version

03/08 = Has one file inside named Filename2.ext

Now 02/08 should have no files inside, so it should go away because 03/08 has the replacement file original.gif

Also if a month goes by that has no submissions (rare) that folder could be deleted away. Or maybe just have a Cleanup tool that users can run for this option

Cleanup tool would be better I think.

In the mean time, how do you do your backups? I run a 2 scripts on my IDM uploads folder. A monthly script backups all files, then every week, a weekly script backs up only the files that have been created or modified in the previous 7 days. I keep the monthly backup and all weeklies until the next monthly one is created.

I haven't done a backup yet.....I am at 17GB for the IDM folder

The whole thing is that I don't want to keep doing a 17GB download every 2-3 weeks, I would rather do differentials. Plus my Downloads folder is within my Forum directory so I am not sure how I can tell Filezilla to backup the forum only and not the Downloads folder sad.gif

OK. My monthly/weekly scripts produce a zipped 'tarball', a single compressed file containing all the files in the download folder. The tarball is placed in a single, separate folder on the server. I then use Filezilla to download that single file. I use the same script for the IDM downloads folder and the 'volatile' folders that IP.Board works with, such as the uploads folder where people's avatars and attachments live.

i think it's better to make somthing like IP.Gallery (files per directory) .
