As one site im obviously using this for a football news site. I was wondering if down the road we decide to make it a member site, free mind you, but essentially have people signup, and in the signup process pick thier favorite team.

Once signed up, based on thier team put them in a member group:

"Cardinals Fan"
"Chargers Fan"

etc. for all 32 teams.

then...

based on their customer/member group, have the site displayed differently, as in replace the main page general NFL news with their favorite teams news and photos and so on. So essentially a custom website for each group. still giving access to the general site if need be, but even the design perha,s change the site colors to their team colors, give it a hometeam feel, etc.

so a few questions..

1. is this possible to auto group members based on a signup question.
2. aside from the 6 months to a year it would take to even create such a site (2 man operation here).. what aspects or stumbles might i come across with such a concept, perhaps with the menus, etc, I guess based on the newly created permission group, we could simply have a "HOMETEAM" menu button, which would guide them to a 2ndary homepage that has a different menu and pages associated, customized to the preferred team, etc...

any other general thoughts i may be missing on the concept or idea i should consider before such a task?

I think it should all be possible with a bit of work using the hook functionality. i.e. you could add a form field to the registration form in the template, and then add a hook for the registration submission that appropriately sets their group based on that field. I'm not sure how to dynamically switch out the templates, though I know you can create as many style sets as you want. Josh might be able to help explain how that might be done.
