I see how such comments wouldn't belong in their latest blog entry, but I actually think it's very suitable for the profile comments.
How would something like "Hey, I really like your blog!" not fit in the profile? The profile is a user's central page on any site, it's not just associated with their forum posts - it's used globally across gallery and blog too.

Plus, such a general comment is more aimed towards the user, not their blog itself. Otherwise they would have made a relevant comment in an entry, no?
I guess you would have to see it to understand the concept and the true value or it's real-estate purpose. Comments in the profile I believe is more about my friends or potential friends commenting about me myself based on what they seen of me in the boards even though commenting about my blog potential is there.
With the new blog design though, I personally think a mini comment block would result in comments geared and directed towards my overall blogging personality.
Example would be "You write the best blogs entries!" or shoutouts "You Rock Man!" which are not blog entry related but more so a reputation/feedback about the blog owner. Personal profiles I think if they were able to be customized like the blogs would warrant the same and even though commenting is there currently, profile customization is not, so the comments you receive there are kinda bland & not utilized to the full potential I think because the profiles are not social to the point you can customize them nor sufficiently linked with blog or gallery activity. I personally think the tabs thing in the middle container of profile could be replaced with a combined activity feed that shows recent blog, posts, topics, comments, gallery & download entries in one container ordered based on profile owner settings to display how many at once in a single container that updates in real time while viewing it instead of last 5 or whatever for each tab as it is now.
Everybody's profile is identical and there is nothing unique or different about them. However, the blog has moved to a social feel of personalization so it's just natural to want a content block to allow members to comment on your blogging
I made a suggestion for IPB 3.0 a feature that would allow admin to decide what would represent the index page of his software such as IP.Portal, IP.Blog, IP.Gallery or IP.Board on the idea that most forums use the forum software as a hub for what their site might really be focused on ie. blog, gallery or board. This was intended to be a neutral suggestion. Most people would like the the portal to represent their homepage without redirects and some the gallery as well some the blog... But let's just say it's the Blog for example and the board is secondary??? If my selling point of my site is to entice members to join up for the blog benefits and "perks" the forums as a means to only interact with everyone on off blog topic subjects, why would a member want to make a blog entry comment on a board profile instead of the blog owners personal page?
You have to remember the forums is just that, forums... Adding in points systems and bla bla is just kooky... The forums is not a social network software and was never intended to be so there is only so much you can do with it. However the Blog and Gallery systems introduces social network potential which can be exploited to it's fullest possibilities and now more so especially since the blog system has got an overhaul. Yeah if you want to see traditional stuff go to a members profile, but if you really want to see something personal then go see that persons blog which includes personal comments of their overall blogging

We are not discussing the old 1.3.3 and earlier blog system, we are discussing the future
