I just launched the program a few minutes ago, and apparently they're not offering a free version anymore, the copy I have expires today.
No website update yet from what I've seen either.

I hope so! Though, I think I've got a CD for McAfee floating somewhere around here...

Would be a shame for this one to become not free as it's a useful free one

I use FileZilla since Smart FTP would always just kill itsself on my Vista partition, but I bought Transmit for the Mac partition so I really have no worries at the moment. It looks nifty, but FileZilla gets the job done and it goes on my Flash drive too, no frills just what I need. Anyways AVG does the job to in conjunction with Webroot.

You have to register it. That's free too. Go to
http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php and do the shebang there, and they send you a key that lets you use it free for a year, at which point you just do it again.
Personally, I don't use any free antivirus. AVG sucks, and Avast looks like someone vomited the UI onto the screen. (Just checked, and apparently nothing's changed there). Hell, Clam has no real-time protection. NOD32 does the job for me, though it's not free.

I like FlashFXP. I use that and I am actually using the sounds that came with some other free one.
I paid for this rather than keep using it free though. There was one I used to use which I can't remember the name of (the one I kept the sounds from and put into this other one), but it started having all kinds of weird issues.
I like this current one because I just ike the look and interface of it mainly.

Smart FTP is good enough to pay for, I believe.
I don't get why everyone is jumping to another product just because they went paid.
If it is a good product, and is useful, why not pay to use it?

I'm trying to remember if I ever tried SmartFTP. Seems like I did and didn't like something about it.

Yeah that's a decent price if people like it enough. I see why some would rather not pay when there are good free ones, so it all comes down to whether the pay one is better than the free ones in each person's mind I guess.

I will have to eventually, I think its actually in the SmartFTP code, but every couple of months, the build expires and it forces you to download the latest one.

I guess you can ask old IPB users why they left because IPB went paid even when 'someone' said it wouldn't be.

Sometimes, we simply don't have the money...
I was using another FTP program but it freezed if I downloaded 4 Go files for instance. So I bought SmartFTP today. But I noticed that it is slow compared to the free version, and to the other FTP programs : the other programs said it would take 6 hours to download a 4 Go files and SmartFTP 3.0 says it will take 12 hours...
It must be a setting I have to configure. Does someone know how I can fix this ?
Thank you !

If there are equal or better free alternatives, use them - simple as that. Aside from the select-and-press-a-button to upload, FileZilla is much better imho.

Does FireFTP finally support sFTP? Server-to-server transfers? Edit-on-server? No? Shame, shame.
Some people require the features that are found in other FTP clients. "Best", in this case, is a personal opinion.

In my opinion, FlashFXP is better value for money.
My biggest annoyance with SmartFTP now being paid is that it doesn't ever actually change all that much.
I haven't used it for about a year now, and when Im looking, the only thing I see thats new is the Office 2007 theme.
Do you really use an FTP client all that much that it needs a super fantastic UI?

Yup... SmartFTP, WinRAR and PowerArchiver, among others, are all nagware, and not really trialware. On my sister's PC, WinRAR has been installed for something like 2,000+ days. And PowerArchiver on my virtual machine is nearing 300 days.
