Lieberman's support for McCain combined with his speech at the RNC is a big contrast to his membership of the Democrats and one time running mate of the Al gore tkts.

What brings him to his waterloo for his party?

I have few suggestions and you can counter or add to it:
  • Liberman was one of four senators (Warner, McCain, Bayh, Lieberman) who introduce a resolution to authorize Bush to take on Iraq...he pretty much want to follow that through and McCain is best suited for that. And to top that up he's very much interested in the peace and security of Israel. Irag War.
  • During his last senatorial election, democrats were not very supportive of him...so this could be a payback time for him.

Yes, he's very hawkish, and has been aligned with Bush rather a lot on foreign policy.

McCain is also a good friend of his, and they're both moderates, and yes the Democrats weren't supportive in his last senate bid, they ran someone against him!

Also he's a twat.

You know, the slang meaning I picked up growing up for the word "twat" was entirely different from the one you Brits apparently learn.

Look it up on urban dictionary...

Nah, it means the same as it does to you, it's just we use it to insult people. Like the much worse c word.

Yes here it's looked at much the same as using the "c" word. You can't really get away with it, except for very informal, nonpublic settings.
