In vBulletin they have a mod where members can't post or PM links or images untill x posts. Either group or by post, it's nice.

Basically it helps prevent spambots from doing much...since they're there for links. I'm on two forums that get a lot of bots. It's very rare that a bot posts something. Even if it does it's generally harmless.

On one forum I help run, all new users are members of of "Members", and are forbidden from making any NEW posts. Once they've made a REPLY to an existing post, they're automatically moved to the "Full Member" group that has no such restrictions. None of the idiots seem able to read the rules, where this is pointed out. It's worked very well, and had thwarted the rare human spam registrant.

That's an interesting idea original.gif , I had not thought of something like that.

Should be in IPB 3.0, as long as you promote members to a new group after X posts:

New features in the BBCode system
...
  • Control which groups can use a bbcode: The bbcode manager now has a multiselect which allows you to specify which groups can utilize the bbcode (secondary groups also supported). So if you want admins to be able to create tables using a [table] bbcode tag, but not members, go for it.

So the forum won't turn text into links even if they don't type or use BBcode buttons?
Μichael
Not being an IPS employee and having access to the coding they're doing, I can't say for sure. I know that right now when you type a URL without using the URL bbcode, when it gets saved it is saved as the bbcode equivalent. I don't know if that's how it will still work. But reading the blog entry, it indicates to me that you will be able to say that your Members group can't use the URL bbcode, which I would guess would mean that if they try to use it it won't parse.

It's all conjecture at this time, though, but it sounds to me like you're getting what you asked for.

Thanks Μichael for your reply.

I'd like to see a demote inactive member component like the one Dean made.
